Deacon Howard Scholarship
The namesake for this scholarship has been an admired and well-respected presence in St. Augustine Catholic Church for many years. As Deacon, he has devoted more than 25 years of his life in service to God, our church and community.
Deacon Halladay has shared with us his thoughts on becoming a Deacon:
"The one thing, by the Grace of God, that inspired me the most in saying 'yes' to being a Deacon for our parish, is my wife, Dina. In her many years of service in retail, which is really serving others, she set a good example for me. She willingly attended all the training sessions with me and insisted I do my best. She really helped me make it through the four years formation program with monthly meetings and studies, what a blessing.
My sponsor, Fr. Vernard Murphy, OFM, along with the Parish Council, willingly supported me all the way. The Knights of Columbus helped me get more involved in our parish ministries.
The Knights of Columbus and, again, the Grace of God, helped Dina and I put into practice the first principal of the Order, 'Charity.' We began volunteering in the Hospice program, the Cursillo community and the different prison ministries. All this effort earned us the Georgia State Council Knights of Columbus 1990 Family of the Year Award.
God has richly blessed us in more ways than we know. One of the richest blessings is assisting at Mass and bringing Holy Communion to those ill, shut-in or unable to attend. We found out you cannot out-give or out-love God in whatever you do. His reward is always greater. Praise the Lord!!"
